Jane Keay – illustrator and painter

I am a self taught artist, born in Shropshire, and have spent more than 30 years living and working in my beloved borderlands. I have been drawing since early childhood, immersing myself in books brimming with imaginative ink illustrations, leaving me with a fascination for creating colour only through the medium of black and white.

My inspiration comes from hours walking amongst the hills and valleys around me. collecting stones, fossils, shells, leaves, bits of old metal, and many more finds, which has left me with a compulsion to visit as many ancient sites as I am able.

I am moved by seasonal shifts, motion and sources of light, be it sunlight, moonshine, or starglow, and reflections, ........all around that I see, feel, and sense.

New works are beginning to reflect a growing sense of the landscape of mind and spirit, a "sentient landscape" where there is no linear timescape, but a sense of awe, where the present and history are mutable. The past, and the ancient, are sensed within the present.

I prefer to use ink, with under and overlays of watercolour, creating an inner glow. My work almost always tells a story, inviting the onlooker to become involved, share in the moment, and take part in the telling of the tale.

I have taught watercolour, ink, drawing, and composition for many years, both individually, and in groups; to beginners, and those who wish to extend their skills.
