Jonathan Middlemiss – painter

Bank House, Bishop's Castle SY9 5BQ

Who I am

Who I am I am an artist in various media, originally from Yorkshire. My ceramics have received awards and are in public international collections and museums. They have been featured in books and many other publications. My pastel paintings have been exhibited in mixed and one man shows around the UK, including being picked to be shown at the Pastel Society, Mall Galleries. I have taught in schools, Further and Higher Education.

What I do

My paintings are expressions of experiences in nature developed from plein air studies. Recently I have wanted to work with subjects of upland, moors and wilderness in Lapland.

What inspires me I am inspired by experiences of immersion in landscape and the opportunity to go to places where the wild lands speak in a way I understood as a child in the Yorkshire Dales and later on the North Yorkshire Moors. The experience of re-tracing my fathers droving routes to market, listening to the sounds of the wooded gills and waterfalls or walking the upland peat bogs and watching the wildlife of these now precious habitats... all become starting points for new paintings. Here I sense the portals to a greater spiritual reality that we have become culturally alienated from and dismiss as irrational, and here are opportunities to remember to appreciate our experience of the world as magical.

Why I do it

I made a living as a ceramic artist to bring up my family for many years. I always wanted to return to my first love of painting, and more recently this has become possible

My work this year

I am working on paintings for an exhibition in the North Yorkshire Moors and one for the Shropshire Hills.

Why you should visit me

My plans are to move to the Bishops Castle area and paint the inspiring landscape of the area. I also hope to offer Wild Intelligence workshops (exercises in nature, exploratory work with multi-sensory development, etc) and would be interested to talk to anyone wanting to take part.

Jonathan will be exhibiting as part of a joint show at  Bank House in Bishops Castle, SY9 5BQ
