Janet Manifold – sculptor

Who I am

I trained and worked first as an interior designer and then in the textile industry. Art and sculpture in particular have been a life-long passion.

What I do

All sorts of things including stage props, scenery painting and large scale sculptures for special events. I have worked in bronze and clay, but most of my sculpture is in alabaster.

What inspires me

Music, time, evolution, wild places, the natural world, silence and contemplation.

Why I do it

Two extremes: the large-scale work is loud, fun, in-your-face fantasy and I love the thrill of creating it. Working with alabaster, on the other hand, is a gentle, co-operative process; tactile and utterly engrossing.

My work this year

Alabaster comes from sea water and to me it resonates with aquatic life going as far back as single-celled bacteria 3.8 billion years ago. I’m trying to capture the very simplest forms which are the basis of the increasing complexity of emerging life.

Why should you visit me

Touch, hold and feel the sculptures, chat, relax and help yourself to refreshments in a beautiful building.
