Andrew Pearson – wood carver

Who I am: A woodcarver specialising in original, contemporary work with an ancient, historical atmosphere. What I do: I like narrative pieces that may be ironic, satirical, humorous, naïve, or play with the accepted genre using skills unchanged in hundreds of years.

What inspires me: European carving in wood and stone from 12th to 17th centuries, particularly Biblical pieces.

Why I do it: I have to, for reasons of sanity as well as money. My work this year: This year has been dominated by a 1m tall carving in Sycamore of a contemporary angel depicted in modern dress; androgynous as one would expect.

Why you should visit me: To see contemporary woodcarving that combines the best of the old with the best of the new.

Andrew will be part of a group show at Upper House in Knucklas, Knighton LD7 1PN
